Ranjan Drama

Ranjan Ramanayake's call recording drama has atteracted public attention to an extent which puts the independency of judiciary at stake, which was considered high during the last regime. Politicians or any other interested party of a court case having closed door discussions on cases with judicial officers or any other related officials is undoubtedly inappropriate.

Having said that, we should also consider the reliability of said recordings in another arena, since the path said recordings were published also is highly unreliable.

MP Ranjan Ramanayake was known as a pretty straight forward politician regardless the immature behavior he shows from time to time. Although he was accused for contempt charges before, he was neither considered a trickster, con artist nor a fraud by anyone whatsoever. Him imitating HE Gotabhaya Rajapakse during the last presidential election might be the only instant, which he was actually hated by his political opponents, on which I also share the same opinion that it was inappropriate.

However, on the day he was arrested firstly it was said that the police was searching his house for some documentation related to a conspiracy. The process became an utter joke due to the videos released by the said MP and various other parties from time to time. Finally he was arrested for possession of a firearm without licence and also for possession of some DVD's which contained porn.

Soon after, Hon. Mahindananda Aluthgamage was saying a different story. He was actually blaiming police for not conducting the investigation up to his expectations. He appeard to be very well informed on the content of the voice recordings, which were soon to follow.

Thereafter, some voice clips, which were said to be recovered from MP Ranjan's residence were published by some totally unusual sources. If they were recovered by the police, they should have been produced before court. Then how the said unusual sources came into possession of the said recordings? It is yet to be disclosed.

When pre-comments are made Hon. Mahindananda Aluthgamage says about the number of recordings which Ranjan had, he was very very specific about what they have discussed on him, which I find very funny. Either Hon. Aluthgamage, was made to listen to the said clips by Ranjan himself at some point they were drunk together or how else it can be?

If we assume, the said recordings genuine for an instant (even it is not difficult to create such), I personally consider it is highly idiotic for a person to keep records of his own telephone conversations which might hold himself legally accountable in the future. And going to distenses like copying the conversations to CDs and keeping them at home, I would ask "Are you out of your mind?". One might keep his own porn, but telephone conversations with judges? He must be seriously insane or a drama is being staged.

Parallely, it was also emphasized as former MP Duminda Silva might have been sentenced under political influence, which appears to be the pin point of this drama. Various parties from various levels will be dancing on fire within the next few weeks making it easy for his excellency to pardon his bestie, with minimum damage to himself.
